Gully Boy Music Review: A one of its kind blend of melodious songs and powerful raps
The music jukebox of Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt starrer Gully Boy is out now. Let's check out what director Zoya Akhtar has in store for us for the music of the much-awaited film.

The trailer of Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt starrer Gully Boy has caught everyone's attention. It's three songs, which has been released so far, are already topping the charts, especially Apna Time Aayega, which has become an anthem of sorts. And now, the full official jukebox of Gully Boy is out. At a time when Bollywood music has gone downhill, Gully Boy music album comprises of a whopping 18 songs and mainly consists of powerful rap tracks.

So, let's take a look at the jukebox of Gully Boy below:

    Asli Hip Hop

Sung by Ranveer Singh, the music and lyrics of this sort of introductory track are by Spitfire. What makes this song work is Ranveer Singh's vocals and Spitfire's lyrics. This short track promises to introduce "Asli Hip Hop" to India. A perfect song to start the one of its kind music album.

    Mere Gully Mein

Sung by Ranveer Singh, Divine and Naezy, the music is composed by Divine, Naezy and Sez on the beat and the lyrics are penned by Divine and Naezy. The song has a catchy beat to it and I bet "Mere Gully Mein" hook will get stuck in your head. However, it is strictly for rap fans because it's difficult to keep a track of the lyrics which are fast-paced. Overall, a good song.

    Doori (poem and song)

There are two versions of this track. The poem is just about a minute long and is written by Javed Akhtar. It will instantly remind you of those poems he wrote in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Sung by Ranveer Singh, the music is composed by Rishi Rich. The poem is a take on our society and how people are growing apart. While the poem leaves a lot to be desired because of its short duration, the song more than makes up for it. Divine joins Javed Akhtar on lyrics and the music goes from negligible to soft. This one's a melodious track and is instantly going into my playlist.

    Train Song

A fun track and also the first in the album which isn't sung by Ranveer Singh, Train song will instantly lift up your mood. Sung by desi rockstar Raghu Dixit along with Karsh Kale, the music is by Midival Punditz & Karsh Kale. The lyrics are penned by Javed Akhtar, Karsh Kale & Gaurav Raina, Tapan Raj. This uplifting song will make you fall in love with it. However, I didn't appreciate the English lyrics. This one's a recreated version of an old Raghu Dixit classic.

    Jingostan (Beatbox and song)

Sung, composed and penned by Dub Sharma, Jingostan has two versions. The first one is beatbox version which is basically a satire on the politically influential times we'll live in. It takes a dig at the lynching and our love of jingoism. The second version too leaves an impact. In fact, the second one works more for me.

    Sher Aaya Sher

Another interesting rap track, sung and penned by Divine, the music is composed by Chandrashekar Kunder aka Major C. Sher Aaya Sher is catchy but it is the music that is at the forefront than the lyrics.

    Jahaan Tu Chala

The song is sung by Jasleen Royal and the music too is composed by her. The lyrics are penned by Aditya Sharma. The soft and melodious track is a like a breath of fresh air. I also loved the placing of the track amidst the raps. Jasleen Royal's voice is so easy on ears.

    Azadi

The famous Kanhaiya Kumar track also finds its way into the album albeit with a rap twist. This one's a powerful track. Divine and Dub Sharma excel in this one. This one is catchy and stays with you.

    Kab Se Kab Tak

Ranveer Singh returns behind the mic. This is another breezy track which is also sung by Vibha Saraf. The music is composed by Ankur Tewari & Karsh Kale and the lyrics are penned by Kaam Bhaari & Ankur Tewari. This is one of its kind romantic track.

    Kaam Bhari

Sung and penned by Kaam Bhari, the music too is composed by him along with Ankur Tewari. The rap of the song is too fast-paced for its own good. Only for those who are die-hard fans of such songs. I am not.

    Ek Hee Raasta

This is another one of my favourites from the album. Javed Akhtar's lyrics will speak with you and the music by Rishi Rich supports it well. Recited by Ranveer Singh, this poem is about finding oneself. How I wish it was longer in duration.

    Apna Time Aayega

This one is already a chartbuster. What more can I say about it? This motivating track is peppy and catchy. This one will be played on a loop. The music is composed by Divine and Dub Sharma and is penned by Dub Sharma and Ankur Tewari.

    Jeene Mein Aaye Maza

This one has the old world charm to it that makes it stand apart from all other songs of the album. This lazy track gives you a lot of "Maza". Ankur Tewari's vocals are a perfect fit. He has also penned the lyrics and is joined by Mikey McClearly on music. Just loved this one.

    Har Gham Mein Khushi Hai

Sung, composed and penned by Ace, the music also features IshQ Bector. While I liked the music, I failed to understand the lyrics as they were too fast. Strictly for rap fans.

    Goriye

The music is composed by Prem & Hardeep. The song is penned by Bhinder Khanpuri, Arjun, Blitz & Desi Ma and sung by Kaka Bhaniawala, Arjun, Blitz & Desi Ma. At first, you'd wonder what's a Punjabi track doing in this album, but I liked the way this album has been throwing surprises at me. This one's a recreated version of Ni Ek Tere Nain Goriye.

    India 91

This rap too is in sync with other rap tracks from the album. But, what makes it different from the other tracks is that it has a perfect blend of Hindi and Marathi rap. The music by Viveick Rajagopalan is catchy and the lyrics by MC Altaf, MC TodFod, 100 RBH, Maharya, Noxious D & MC Mawali are fine too. The song is sung by MC Altaf, MC TodFod, 100 RBH, Maharya & Noxious D. I loved the traditional touch given to this song.

    Verdict

Overall, the soundtrack of Gully Boy is as unique as it gets. Trust Zoya Akhtar to deliver another musical epic. This one is truly a revolutionary. Also, is there anything Ranveer Singh can't do?

    Our pick

Jeene Mein Aaye Maza, Apna Time Aayega, Jingostan, Azadi, Doori, Ek Hee Raasta, Train Song, Jahaan Tu Chala.

    Rating: 3.5 stars
