Room Heater Buying Guide

This guide will help you in picking the right heater for your home. It will include important information about room heaters, and what features to look for.

Type Of Room Heater

There are 3 main types of room heaters:

Convection heater – This is a very common type of room heater. It operates through air convection. Air is circulated inside the appliance and across the heating element. This causes the air to become warm and expand. This is then delivered to you through warm air.

Oil-filled heaters are a common example of convection heaters.

Convection heaters are quiet, and they’re effective at heating up rooms. But they also take a while to fully heat up a room.

Radiant heater – A radiant heater is another common type of room heater. It simply uses a heating element, with no air convection or fan. It emits heat through infrared heating.

Radiant heaters are cheaper than other types of heater. They’re effective at heating up small areas. They’re best used as personal heaters that are kept close to you. They’re not very effective at heating up the whole room.

Fan heater – This is often confused with a convection heater, but it’s different. It uses a fan to pass air through a heating element. This warms up the air and delivers it directly to the room.

The advantage with a fan heater is that it’s faster than non-fan heaters. So you can heat up a room quickly with it. But it’s also more noisy than other types of heater, since it uses a fan.

Features

In order to select the right room heater, pay attention to the following features:

Power – The power is measured in watts, and it’s one of the most important features. It will tell you how much area the heater can warm. So the larger the room you have, the more powerful heater you will need.

Radiant heaters will have less wattage, because they only heat up small areas. If you want a heater for a big room, then you can get a heater with a power of up to 2500 watts.

Safety switch-off – This is a safety feature which will switch off the power automatically if the heater tilts over and falls. It’s a useful feature and most room heaters have it nowadays.

Weight & Mobility – It’s a good idea to check the weight of the room heater before buying. If you need to move it from room-to-room, then a lightweight heater is better.

The heavier heaters will usually have wheels at the bottom, for easy movement.
