Indian cities among world’s most ‘unliveable’ in Mercer Quality of Living Survey 2019

The Mercer Quality of Living Survey 2019 is out and Indian cities of New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad languish at the near bottom of the list.

New Delhi: In a list released by global consulting firm Mercer, Indian cities fared badly in the quality of living survey. The comprehensive survey is done with many factors being considered like housing, crime, political stability, leisure, air pollution, infrastructure, health system, education and economy.

The most notable inclusion in the Mercer Quality of Living Survey 2019 is the ranking on personal safety, which “analyses cities’ internal stability; crime levels; law enforcement; limitations on personal freedom; relationships with other countries and freedom of the press.”

This year’s list sees Indian cities of New Delhi (162), Kolkata (160), Mumbai (154), Chennai (151), Bengaluru (149), Pune (143) and Hyderabad (143) languishing in the bottom section among the 231 cities ranking on liveability.

The survey ranked many cities from southern Asia and New Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru remained unchanged from last year’s ranking for overall quality of living. However, there was an uptick as Chennai ranked as the safest city in the south Asian region at the 105th spot.

The least safe city in the south Asia region is Pakistan’s Karachi which has been ranked at 226th spot. Globally, Iraq’s capital Baghdad is at the bottom of the list due to an economic, security and societal crisis.
