Delhi govt fined Rs 25 crore over air pollution: ‘Who’ll pay this?’ Gautam Gambhir slams CM Arvind Kejriwal

The National Green Tribunal has asked the Delhi government to deposit Rs 25 crore with the Central Pollution Control Board for its failure to curb air pollution in the city.

New Delhi: After the National Green Tribunal slapped Rs 25 crore fine on the Delhi government for their failure to curb the problem of pollution in the city, cricketer Gautam Gambhir on Monday came down heavily on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The cricketer expressed anguish over the fine imposed by the National Green Tribunal.

The NGT had on Monday asked the Delhi government to deposit Rs 25 crore with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) as a penalty. "Despite clear directions by the tribunal, there is hardly any action for compliance of orders and pollution continues unabated in blatant violation of the law and under the nose of the authorities who have hardly done anything concrete except furnishing excuses and helplessness," a bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said.

Expressing anger, Gambhir asked: "Who’ll pay this fine? Of course me, the taxpayer. I wish I had the option of saying that my tax is not for Delhi CM’s callousness". He had tagged both Kejriwal and the BJP.

The NGT was hearing petitions lodged by Mundka village resident Satish Kumar and Tikri-Kalan native Mahavir Singh, who had claimed that pollution is being caused by burning of motor engine oil, plastic, leather, rubber, and other waste materials and non-stop operation of illegal industrial units dealing with such articles on agricultural lands in Mundka and Neelwal villages.

Even after more than four-and-a-half years, the complaint of the aggrieved parties is that the pollution caused by the unregulated handling of plastic continues without any reduction, said the green panel.
