Calling All History Nerds & Lovers Of Art & Culture: Here’s A List Of The Best Museums In Delhi!

To the point: Museums are a gateway to the past and can actually be a very fun hang-out if you’re a history buff, or even if you just want to learn something new about forgotten objects and enterprises. As such, check out our list of Delhi’s best museums if you are looking for recommendations!

Delhi is a city with a rich history as it has been a host to diverse kingdoms, emperors, and cultures. It thus follows that the city has a culture of museum-going, with a wide variety of museums where you can indulge even your most obscure interests. Be it taking your little one for an educational trip, simply wanting to do something different and educate yourself, or even ditching the usual dates in CyberHub with your significant other, museums will always welcome you! Read on for our guide to the best museums in Delhi that you should definitely visit!

1. National Museum

One of the largest museums in India, the National Museum houses a variety of articles ranging from pre-historic eras to modern works of art. You can tour the different departments in the museum including (but not limited to) Archaeology, Manuscripts, Numismatics & Epigraphics, Paintings, Arms & Armour, and Decorative Arts. It features sculptures, artworks and more from all regions of India.  If you’re interested in Indian history and culture, this is definitely a must-visit, especially if this is your first time in India (or even Delhi!) or if you’ve lost touch with your knowledge of the subject.

Now for a trip down memory lane - the museum was proposed by Sir Maurice Gwyer, after an exhibition on Indian arts and artifacts was organised by the Royal Academy of Arts, London. The museum is also disability-friendly, with a new permanent gallery for disabled persons which has tactile replicas of 22 objects along with audio guides, ramps, and labels in Braille. If you work with disabled persons or are disabled yourself, then you can visit this museum without hesitation. As such, the National Museum is definitely one of the best museums in New Delhi!
