4 things that will happen to your body if you stop drinking alcohol

Have you resolved to reduce your alcohol intake this year?

In the new year, a lot of people around the globe have resolved to either give up drinking, or at least reduce their intake. In keeping with the same resolution, the trend of Dry January took birth--where people vowed to go off alcohol for the 31 days of January.

But if you're somebody who drinks regularly--be it monthly, bi-monthly, weekly, bi-weekly or more often--giving up alcohol can bring about lots of changes in your body. Here are some things that are bound to happen to you if you do indeed give up on alcohol in 2018:

You will sleep better

It's no secret that alcohol disrupts the most restorative phase of sleep that occurs later in the night. That's why, some people sleep much less than usual on the nights that they drink. Better sleep would thus mean a much more productive next day, improving the overall quality of your life.

Your skin will look younger

Though it's true that the antioxidants in wine give you an afterglow (as long as you're not guzzling wine like water), most hard liquors have an adverse affect on skin. Alcohol basically leads to dehydration, which in turn saps the youthful glow of the skin.

You will lose weight

You don't have to be Einstein to figure this out. Alcohol is loaded with calories. From 70 to 150 calories per drink--depending on what you're consuming--that's how many calories you consume in just alcohol alone. Thanks to lowered inhibitions, you also end up eating much more when drinking. And not to forget, the morning-after heavy breakfast to get rid of that pesky hangover.

Your immunity will get stronger

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, even one night of drinking (till you're drunk) can interfere with your body's ability to produce cytokines, or chemicals that help fight off infections. So, imagine what regular drinking does to your immune system.
