Thursday, March 8, 2018 IST
Sanchi, a town located 49 kilometres from Bhopal, is famous throughout the world for its Buddhist stupas. These Buddhist monuments, dating from the 3rd century BCE to the 12th CE, are a place of great importance for Buddhist pilgrims.
The Great Stupa is one of the oldest stone structures in India and was originally commissioned by the emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE to preserve and spread the Buddhist philosophy. In 1989 it was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site and since then, it is among the best conserved ancient Stupas of India.
Today more than 50 monuments stand on the hill of Sanchi, spreading the message of peace through Buddhist art and architecture.
