We do smoke, drink, swear, have sex, says Sonam Kapoor on Veere Di Wedding’s reality
Sonam Kapoor has defended the portrayal of female friendships and women in general in her upcoming movie, Veere Di Wedding. In an interview to film critic Anupama Chopra for her YouTube channel Film Companion, Sonam said she has known women like the ones portrayed in the movie in real life.
The actors of Veere Di Wedding -- Sonam, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Swara Bhaskar and Shikha Talsania-- were asked about ‘reducing female empowerment to behaving like men,’ as many had accused the film of upon watching the trailer. The four lead characters were heard swearing, seen drinking and enjoying an active sex life before getting married.
Sonam said that to think they are reducing female empowerment to anything in itself is wrong. “I don’t think this question would be posed to men that you are drinking, smoking and abusing or sexually active, does this make you less of a man?,” said Sonam.
Swara also chimed in by clarifying that no one said that Veere Di Wedding is a feminist film. “Just because people saw four girls who are in a certain urban setting being realistic to what young urban working women, what their lifestyle is... a lot of us who come from this background, we do curse, we do drink..,” she said as Sonam added, “And we are sexually active. We are not sitting waiting till we get married.”
Swara further said, “Just because we are showing that on screen why is that becoming an issue? When we allow our male characters to be as close to reality as possible, why can’t we let our women have that?”
Sonam then talked about Pyaar Ka Punchnama and how its very misogynistic dialogues didn’t ruffle any feathers. “People have celebrated that film and nobody has once said that don’t you think you are being a little misogynistic by talking about how women are a certain way and how men are looked at as commitment phobic and women are desperate to get married?”
“At a point where we are making a film which is entertaining, which is pretty real... We do swear, we do talk in a certain way,” she added.
Veere Di Wedding is a female buddy film about four girls living in an urban setting and their struggles in life. The film will release on June 1, 2018.
