Madhya Pradesh is truly a land of royalty. Two of India’s greatest dynasties, the Scindias and Holkars, ruled this state and their glory is evident even today. While the rajas, ranis, begums and nawabs are long gone, you can still get an experience of the royal life they lived, thanks to these hotels.
Jehan Numa Palace, Bhopal
Named after Sultan Jehan, one of the Begums of Bhopal, this hotel was once a 19th century royal residence that was subsequently converted into a world-class heritage hotel. Spread over 7 acres, this hotel houses 99 rooms and 6 restaurants and is the perfect place to indulge all your nawabi shauk. The recipes that the chefs use here have been passed down since generations. So not only is Jehan Numa Palace high on royalty, it’s high on tradition too!
Sheesh Mahal, Orchha
This near 400-year-old palace was once the residence of Raja Udait Singh, Maharaja of Orchha. A part of this magnificent structure was then turned into a resort by the MP government, its regal charm still intact. A sound and light show that tells you the history of Orchha is a major tourist attraction. And while you’re here, you can also go river rafting and taste Bundelkhandi cuisine.
Taj Usha Kiran Palace, Gwalior
This 135-year-old palace is now a 40-room hotel that is run by the Taj group and some of the rooms in the hotel have been designed by Maharani Priyadarshini Raje Scindia herself. From sandstone carvings to filigree work, a lot of the intricate construction details you see here are reflective of the structure’s rich heritage.
So the next time you visit Madhya Pradesh, make it a point to visit these hotels and add that royal touch to your holiday.
