Mahindra XUV 300 vs Hyundai Creta – Comparison

The Mahindra XUV300 is based on the X100 platform of the Ssangyong Tivoli, which makes it spacious enough to compete with the Hyundai Creta

Mahindra XUV300 is only days away from its launch and will hit the market on 14 February 2019. The new model will become a direct rival to the Maruti Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport, and Tata Nexon. It will be available with turbocharged petrol and diesel engines that will make it the most torquiest offering in the segment.

Plus, its X100 platform, which comes from the Ssangyong Tivoli, will help it take the fight straight to the Hyundai Creta as well. The Ssangyong Tivoli is a globally well-received small SUV that measures 4,195 mm in length and has a wheelbase of 2,600 mm. The Mahindra XUV300, in comparison, measures only 3,995 mm.

However, it has the same wheelbase, which means the legroom for the passengers remains the same. Also, with a width of 1,821 mm, the XUV is even wider than the Tivoli, which measures 1,798 mm in width. This attribute will help it take on the Hyundai Creta.

To put things in the perspective, the Hyundai Creta measures 4,270 mm in length, 1,780 mm in width, and 1,665 in height. It has a wheelbase of 2,590 mm and a boot space of 400 litres. This makes it quite clear that the Creta is longer than the XUV300, but the interesting bit here is that it has a slightly shorter wheelbase than the Mahindra XUV300.

Dimensions Mahindra XUV300 Hyundai Creta
Length 3995 mm 4,270 mm
Width 1821 mm 1,780 mm
Height 1617 mm 1,665 mm
Wheelbase 2600 mm 2,590 mm
Boot space 265 L 400 L

Also, with an overall width of 1,780 mm, it isn’t anywhere as wide as the baby-XUV, which is about to become the widest SUV in the category. Hence, it gets quite clear that the Mahindra XUV300 will offer even better passenger space than the Hyundai Creta. The only area where it will lag is the boot space.

Compared to the 400 litres boot that the Creta offers, the XUV300 offers only 265 litres. This is a result of the company’s move to shorten the overall length of the model. However, the sub-4-metre length should help the SUV with lower taxation, thereby enabling the company to price the new model aggressively.

The Mahindra XUV300 will be sold with powerful 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines. The former will output a maximum power of 110 bhp and a peak torque of 200 Nm, while the latter will produce 115 bhp and 350 Nm. For now, both the motors will be available only with a 6-speed manual transmission.

Mahindra XUV300 vs Maruti Vitara Brezza Specs Comparison

In comparison, the Hyundai Creta is available with three engine options – 1.4-litre diesel, 1.6-litre diesel, and 1.6-litre petrol. All the motors come mated to a 6-speed manual transmission as standard. The 1.6-litre options even get a 6-speed automatic option. The smaller diesel engine produces 90 bhp and 220 Nm.

The 1.6-litre diesel engine outputs 126 bhp and 260 Nm, while the 1.6-litre petrol engine provides the user with 121 bhp and 151 Nm. The feature-packed top-end XUV300 will compete against the entry-level Creta and it has all the bells and whistles to be a success.

Mahindra XUV300 vs Maruti Vitara Brezza Mileage Comparison

Model Mahindra XUV300 Hyundai Creta (ARAI)
Mileage 17 kmpl (petrol), 20 kmpl (diesel) Petrol 1.6L  – 15.29 km/l

Diesel 1.4 L – 21.38 km/l

Diesel 1.6L – 19.67 km/l

Mahindra XUV300 vs Creta Design

Both Creta and XUV300 look quite bold and have an aggressive stance. The new model among these two has hints of the Ssangyong Tivoli’s design, but in words of Mahindra, gets several ‘Cheetah-inspired’ styling cues. The highlight of the front-end includes a set of sleek projector headlamps with LED DRLs that extend till the fog lamp housings and gives a unique look to the front-end SUV. The company has given faux skid plates at front and rear to further impart a touch of ruggedness to the SUV.

The Creta received a facelift last year and looks bold and fresh. Its front-end gets a large hexagonal cascading-effect grille that is flanked by projector headlamps, and a muscular bumper with LED DRLs placed on the fog lamp housing. At the rear, it gets wrap-around taillights, while the side profile flaunts stylish 17-inch diamond alloy wheels.

Mahindra XUV300 vs Hyundai Creta Features

The Mahindra XUV300 is a feature-laden model that impresses with its segment-best equipment list. All the variants of the new SUV will get electric windows, ABS with EBD< disc brakes on all four wheels, LED taillights, and rear parking sensors. Moreover, the top-end W8(O) trim will get first-in-segment dual-zone climate control, electric sunroof, 7-airbags, leather seats, touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, cruise control, electrically operated exterior mirrors, Auto-dimming IRVM and more.

The Hyundai Creta isn’t far behind in this aspect. The top-spec version of this SUV gets a wireless charger, electric sunroof, touch screen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, single-zone climate control, cruise control, rear camera with parking sensors and dynamic guidelines, rear AC vents, leather seats, 6-airbags, ABS with EBD, etc.

Mahindra XUV300 vs Hyundai Creta Price

Prices of the Hyundai Creta start at Rs. 9.50 lakh, while the top-end diesel variant costs Rs. 15.63 lakh (all prices are ex-showroom, Delhi). Mahindra is yet to announce the prices of the XUV300, but one can expect the new model to cost roughly Rs 8-11 lakh.

Model Price
Mahindra XUV300 (S201) Rs 7.50 – 11.50 Lakh (est)
Hyundai Creta Rs 9.60 – 15.60 Lakh (ex-showroom)

The Mahindra XUV300 will definitely enjoy a price advantage owing to the lower excise duty it will have to pay due to its sub-4-metre overall length. However, its engines and features stay comparable to that of the Hyundai Creta.

Features That Mahindra XUV300 Offers But Hyundai Creta Doesn’t:

1. 7 Airbags

Mahindra XUV 300 will offer first-in-segment 7 airbags, which is not even present in any of the SUV from the higher segment. The sub-4m compact SUV will offer dual front airbags, side airbags, curtain airbags and driver-side knee airbag.

The knee-airbag saves the driver’s legs from any impact during high-speed accidents. It makes the driver much safer. The Hyundai Creta only offers 6 airbags in total including dual front airbags, side airbags and curtain bags. Lower variants of both the SUVs offer a lower number of airbags.

2. Disc brakes on four wheels

The Mahindra XUV 300 will also offer segment-first disc brakes on all the four wheels of the XUV 300. Most of the vehicles in the affordable segment in India come with disc brakes only at the front and rear wheels get drum brakes. Even the Hyundai Creta gets the front disc brakes and rear drum brakes set-up. The disc brakes in rear offers superior and precise braking feedback.

3. Heated ORVMs

The Mahindra XUV 300 will offer the heated Outside Rear View Mirrors (ORVMs), which will be pretty handy during cold weather or rainy weather. Such a feature is only available with more expensive vehicles in the Indian market. Hyundai does not offer any such feature with the Creta in the Indian market.

4. TPMS

The XUV 300 will also get the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), which is extremely useful and is a safety device. The TPMS keeps an eye on the air pressure in the individual tyres and warns the driver when the tyre pressure becomes too low. This can save the vehicle from tyre burst and is an easy way to keep the air pressure at an optimum level all the time. Only high-end vehicles offer such features and it is also available with the Mahindra XUV 500.

5. Dual Zone climate control system

The Mahindra XUV 300 offers the segment-first Dual-Zone Climate Control System. The driver and the co-driver can set their own temperature in the XUV 300. This allows much greater control on the AC system and allows the passengers to be in their comfort zone.

Most of the times, This feature comes in handy when driving under harsh sun and one side of the vehicle is exposed to direct sunlight. This increases the temperature on one side of the vehicle while the other side remains cooler. The Hyundai Creta offers a regular automatic climate control system where you can set only a single, uniform temperature for the whole car.

6. Front parking sensors

The Mahindra XUV 300 offers segment-first front parking sensors. The front parking sensors make it extremely easy to park in the tight spots. The front parking sensors in the XUV 300 only works below a certain speed limit, which allows the vehicle to be in heavy bumper-to-bumper traffic without these sensors getting activated. The Hyundai Creta does not come with any such feature and there are only rear parking sensors and a reverse camera available with the mid-size SUV.

7. Smart Steer

The Mahindra XUV 300 will offer the first-in-segment steering modes too. The Smart is a rare feature and is available with expensive vehicles. It works by allowing the driver to set different steering modes in the vehicle. There are three options – Normal, Comfort and Sport. The modes change the weight of the steering wheel and make the vehicle much more suitable for the heavy traffic situations or open highways.

Mahindra XUV300 vs Hyundai Creta Comparison Verdict

Price – While the Mahindra XUV300 will offer a long list of features and engines that will be comparable to that of the Hyundai Creta, it will be cheaper because it’s a sub-4-metre model that is taxed as per a lower slab.

Features – Both the SUVs have their plus points in this aspect, but it’s the XUV300 that impresses with features like dual-zone climate control and seven airbags. The Hyundai Creta still offers a wireless charger and six airbags.

Specs & Mileage – On paper, at least, the Mahindra XUV300 is a clear match for the Hyundai Creta. Also, it is expected to offer a slightly higher mileage.

Design & Dimension – Design is subjective to personal tastes, and hence, there’s no clear winner in this aspect. Regarding dimensions, the XUV300 is a match for the Creta in every department except for that of the boot space, where it lags a bit.

Comparison Verdict – From the above Mahindra XUV300 vs Hyundai Creta comparison, it is clear that the new model can give the Creta a run for its money.
