Google Pixel 2 XL for Rs 15,599, BSNL offering unlimited data, Huawei assures software updates and more: Daily News Wrap - June 29

Here are the top stories from today in technology.

We’re nearly at the end of June, and the last weekday of the month brings us some exciting stories from the world of technology. The Google Pixel 2 XL is available at a huge discount if you buy it from Airtel, BSNL is offering unlimited data on its postpaid plans, Huawei assures regular software updates on some of its phones, and more. Here are the top stories from the world of technology today.

Colossal 128TB SD Cards could soon be a reality

The SD Association, a group of over 900 companies that set the standards for the SD storage format, has announced that the new standard for storage cards could allow for a theoretical 128TB of storage. The SD Express format is still some way away from production, and for now, the highest capacity SD card available tops out at 512GB.

Samsung Galaxy On6 will be a Flipkart exclusive

The Samsung Galaxy On6 is reported to be launching on July 2, and will be a Flipkart exclusive. The phone will be priced at around Rs 15,000, and will be a rare Samsung device that is sold exclusively online. Samsung has among the most comprehensive smartphone dealership networks in India, and most of its models are sold both online and offline.

Huawei commits to updates for its devices every two months

Close on the heels of a similar announcement by OnePlus, Huawei has committed to rolling out software updates that include bug fixes, new features and Android security patches for many of its key smartphones. Just like OnePlus, Huawei has assured that updates will be offered once every two months at least, for its key devices including the Huawei P20 Pro, Huawei P10 and more. Currently, only the Huawei P20 Pro and Huawei P20 Lite are available in India.

BSNL now offering unlimited data with postpaid plans

Government of India-owned mobile operator BSNL has announced that it is now offering unlimited data with its postpaid plans and add-on data packs on postpaid, starting July 1. This isn’t a major change; the operator will simply treat the data allowance as an FUP limit, post which it will allow unlimited data usage at 40kbps. This will ensure that users are remain connected (albeit at a very low speed) and are not charged further post exhaustion of their data plan allowance.

Google Pixel 2 XL for Rs 15,599, but make sure you read the fine print

Buying the Google Pixel 2 XL from Airtel can get you the device with a one-time payment of Rs 15,599 (for the 64GB variant), but there is some fine print here. You will only get the phone at the discounted price if you also subscribe to a Rs 2,799 postpaid plan from Airtel for 18 months. The plan comes with unlimited calling and 50GB of 4G/3G/2G data per month, with the rest of the cost going towards effectively paying off the balance of the price of the phone. Think of it as an EMI scheme, with an initial downpayment.
